Lane Kiffin vs. the entire state of Tennessee

Submitted by Mark Nagi on July 24, 2010 - 5:54pm

Look, I never expected Lane Kiffin to buy a summer home in Murfreesboro...

But it's getting to the point that eventually, he will have upset sports fans in every city, town, village and hamlet in the state of Tennessee.

On Saturday Kiffin swooped in to hire Tennessee Titans running backs coach Kennedy Pola as his
offensive coordinator at Southern Cal.

USA soccer... yes, it matters

Submitted by Mark Nagi on June 26, 2010 - 10:51pm

Don't remember the slow starts...

Don't recall the opportunity left on the field in Rustenburg...

Just think about your reaction when Landon Donovan scored the game winning goal in stoppage time against Algeria.  Check out the reactions of American soccer fans across the country on youtube.

Yes, people do care about soccer in this country.

USA vs. Ghana... A Fearless Prediction

Submitted by Mark Nagi on June 25, 2010 - 11:51am

I got chills...

When Landon Donovan scored the game winning goal in stoppage time against Algeria, The Crown & Goose pub in the Old City got loud.  Really loud.

The spontaneous reaction, the complete strangers giving each other high fives, the chants of U-S-A...

The World Cup: Soccer at its best

Submitted by Mark Nagi on June 12, 2010 - 11:12pm

I'll admit it.  I'm a cliche when it comes to soccer.

I grew up in the suburbs of Albany (NY), played soccer throughout my childhood, and was even the co-captain of my high school team.

Then I went to college, and with the exception of kicking the ball around a bit in intermurals, I abandoned the game.

There have been exceptions. I went to watch the World Cup in 1994 in Foxborough, and yes, I've seen an English Premier League game in person at Tottenham in 1999, but I can't watch the MLS, and don't put their highlights in my sportscasts.

Next stop: Oklahoma City

Submitted by Mark Nagi on May 29, 2010 - 8:25pm

The Lady Vols softball team, by all accounts, was supposed to be a year away.  With freshmen and sophomores all over the lineup, Tennessee should have been too young and inexperienced to advance to the Women's College World Series.

No one told that to the Lady Vols...

Their two game sweep at Michigan, a team that returned almost everyone from the previous seasons WCWS squad, opened up a lot of eyes in the softball world.

Lady Vols softball a model of consistency

Submitted by Mark Nagi on May 23, 2010 - 4:54pm

The Tennessee Lady Vols softball team has become one of UT's most consistent winners.

On Sunday they beat Louisville 3-1 in extra innings, to capture the NCAA Regional title, and earn a trip to Michigan for the Super Regionals.

Was there a post-Monica Abbott effect with this program?  Perhaps.  The past two years the Lady Vols lost at home in the NCAA Regionals.  But they are back on track now.

Fearless Prediction: LeBron James will choose...

Submitted by Mark Nagi on May 16, 2010 - 10:10pm

Over the next few weeks, two-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James will have to make a major decision...

Re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team he made relevant during his seven years in the NBA?  Or jump ship, and sign with another franchise... and if so, where will he go?

Eric Berry: Prepared for the NFL

Submitted by Mark Nagi on May 8, 2010 - 6:47pm

Recognize this guy? He's now the future of the Kansas City Chiefs franchise.

Eric Berry lived up to all the hype he brought with him to Knoxville.  Son of a former Vol, one of the best high school players in the state of Georgia...

In three years at Tennessee, he played with maturity, and was a class act on and off the field.

Tennessee baseball: A work in progress

Submitted by Mark Nagi on April 25, 2010 - 10:08pm

I was at Lindsey Nelson Stadium for the first game of the Vols doubleheader against Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon.

Tennessee gave up a game tying homer in the final inning.  They lost their cool after a couple of calls from the men in blue.  They bunted into a double play...

But they still won, thanks to a walk-off homer from Blake Forsythe.  Tennessee won the nightcap in walk-off fashion as well.  In short, nothing comes easy for these guys.

The Vols are fighting to get into the SEC tournament.  If they finish in the top 8, they'll pl

Why the NCAA's anti-taunting rule is a good thing

Submitted by Mark Nagi on April 15, 2010 - 2:51pm

I know what you are thinking...

Refereeing in NCAA football is so bad that there is no way they won't screw this up too.

And I know my opinion is in the minority here...
