Jonathan Crompton... give him a break

Submitted by Mark Nagi on September 30, 2009 - 10:18am

Right now there is no one in Knoxville receiving more grief than Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton.

Through four games, he has eight interceptions.  The Vols passing attack has been so limited in effectiveness that some fans are calling for UT to bring back the wishbone.

We all know this isn't what Tennessee had in mind.  You know what?  Tennessee isn't what Crompton had in mind either.

Since arriving on campus in 2005, Crompton has had to learn under two head coaches (Fulmer, Kiffin) and four offensive coordinators (Sanders, Cutcliffe, Clawson, Cheney).  No quarterback should have their development slowed by that frequency of change.

Crompton never lived up to the hype he brought with him from Tuscola (NC) High School, when he was one the nation's top recruits.  Is that any reason for the boos?  The slams on the call-in shows?  The vulgarities directed towards his family at Neyland Stadium?  I won't even go into the things typed about him by anonymous cowards on the message boards.

Give the kid a break.  Yes, he plays the highest profile position in the highest profile sport.

But he's still a kid.

Are you kidding me Mark?

Lets just call it like it is....IF you are going to play in the SEC and at Tennessee, it doesnt matter how many offensive coordinators you go through.....if you CANT throw the ball at all, you dont need to be playing! It doesnt take an Einstein to know that you throw the ball to YOUR receiver, not the other teams players, the ground or the crowd. Its as simple as knowing how to throw and that he doesnt know how to do.

WHAT IF IT WERE YOUR SON?

Submitted by Janey (not verified) on October 2, 2009 - 10:56am.

I'm so sick of these so-called fans who are verbally beating down a young man who, although it's not what we might want, is giving UT his very best. Brent, do you actually think berating this young man publically, booing him, ridiculing him, will make him any better? What would YOU do, or how would YOU feel, if that were YOUR SON? What if you had to sit in the stands listening to a bunch of rednecks (who've probably not even played T-ball) saying things to YOUR son that shouldn't be said to your enemies? What if YOU were a UT prospect hearing all these alleged fans talking trash and heckling the quarterback? Would YOU sign with them? All you ignorant people who call yourselves fans should be ashamed. Just because YOUR life is undoubtedly a collossal failure, don't take it out on our quarterback.

I don't know why ya'll are

I don't know why ya'll are arguing about this. Crompton is pretty much all we got. Yeah I know Stevens and Richardson are there, and lets admit it, a highschool quarterback can atleast move the ball 5 yards a play. I think Kiffen is playing for next year. He wants his recruit from Callie to come start. The only way for that to happen is not to get anyone else assimilated into the program. Yes we will lose games but hopefully we will not lose the recruit. Just get used to loosing. Is it really that bad. Think of how many times Fulmer lost last year. The title should be "Give Kiffen a break," he's the one letting Crompton play. Wait till next year. Then we can complain. If we lose at all. If we can shore up our D next year without our awesome heighsman senoir, and get a QB. Look out world 'cause we're comin!!

Football players are

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on October 4, 2009 - 2:19pm.

Football players are performers, just like any other entertainment field and even in the work world. Any person in the lead position gets the glory and the blame. Fans are payind alot of money to support the program. UT football is Ktowns "pro" team. School officials and coaches should tell the kids up front that's how it is even though they don't want to admit it. So I don't see the fans giving Vols a break after spending hard earned money on "pro" entertainment. The school and the community created it now they got to sleep in it. I think the booing can help. Laugh at it and go on to try and prove the fans wrong. And if you succeed you get the glory for life. If you fail you learned something valuable for life. Go Vols Boo Vols-Who cares.Have fun
