2009 World Series... A Fearless Prediction

Submitted by Mark Nagi on October 27, 2009 - 8:08pm

Ok folks, first things first... Full disclosure.  I have been a Yankees fan since I was a little kid.  I was eight years old when I went to my first game.  It was April of 1981, and the Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 5-1.

One of my fondest childhood memories was watching the Yankees rally with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the California Angels in the summer of 1983.

To this day I still think the George Brett pinetar ruling was originally correct, and never should have been overturned.

Don Mattingly is my favorite athlete of all time.

I could go on and on with Yankees propaganda, but that's not the point of this blog entry.  This is the time for a "Fearless Prediction."

The 2009 World Series gets underway Wednesday night in The Bronx.  The Yankees taking on the defending World Champion Philadelphia Phillies.

It has all the makings of a terrific showdown.  Both teams have guys that can hit and guys that can pitch.  To me, the difference will be the bullpen.  The Phillies have had their issues in that department, while the Yankees have the ultimate difference maker, Mariano Rivera, waiting if they get him a lead before the 8th inning.

I'm taking the Yankees in 6 games.

What do you think?  Leave your comments below.

Mark's 2009 Fearless Prediction Record: 6-1

Mark, I like to you a lot as sportscaster. And I'm sure you're a swell guy I would enjoy hanging out with and talking sports. But your being a Yankees fan, that's like.....like cheering for the lions against the Christians, or cheering for the hunters against the baby seals. Or like cheering for Alabama in anything.

The Yanks are everything that's wrong with sports and have been for a long, long time. The old era Yankees might have had some character and/or class. But today's Yanks use the rest of the major leagues as their farm club, have a roster full of admitted cheaters, and glory in their over spending and under performing like it's something to be proud of. They do it the wrong way and still can't dominate like a team with their bankroll should.

I hope the Phils sweep them and expose the Yanks' empty facade for all the world to see. I would say "good luck" to your team, but frankly I'd rather they all get the flu and forfeit the series.

Money ISN'T everything, Yanks not buying what they say

I like the prediction, but I think you might be selling the Phils a bit short. I see it going 7.

As for "the Yankees buying everything" argument, BAH! The Yankee management, the Yankee fans and the media in NY demands more. The owners of the Minn Twins could buy and sell the Steinbrenners, but they don't. Why not? Because they don't want to. Does 'buying' everything work? Ask:

- Randy Johnson,
- Carl Pavano
- Kevin Brown
- Jared Wright
- Jeff Weaver
- Jason Giambi
- Jose Contreras
- Kei Igawa

Bust, bust, bust, bust, bust. Bankroll doesn't = winning, it just doesn't. And frankly, EVERY team in professional sports has cheaters on their roster. Your team has cheaters too. To think otherwise is narrow minded and naive.

When the Yanks won in the 90s and 2000, it was with home grown talent (Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Williams, Pettitt, etc). I am not saying they don't spend foolishly, and do buy too many players, but it doesn't usually work so that argument holds NO water with me.

The Yankees are playing by the rules and pay the price and luxury taxes. Your team could spend more money too, but your team chooses not to. Those that use this argument must not like the US owning all the best military weapons and technology, not fair to the other countries, right? This argument can be summed up as jealousy that your team doesn't want it as bad as the Yankees do.

Look at Forbes' recent article about the "Business of Baseball". Many other teams could spend, but their owners choose not to. What team made the most money in 2008? The Marlins. You know what, reinvest in the team, and you might win some more too!

They Yankees fans, city, media and ownership wants it, it's tied to their ego. Go Yanks!
