Vols vs. Memphis... A Fearless Prediction
I've never been able to explain to my friends up north just how large a state Tennessee is.
Memphis and Knoxville share the same "TN" after the comma, but the cities are as far apart, and as different as can be... as are the football programs that represent their respective universities.
(Editor's note. Using the word "as" four times in one sentence... not something your 8th grade English teacher would suggest).
In 21 all-time meetings, the Vols have only lost to Memphis once, the classic "He was down!" game in 1996. That loss cost the Vols an opportunity to play in the major bowl game in the pre-BCS era.
This year's matchup features a Memphis team that is 2-6. Their only wins have come agains UTEP and UT-Martin. The Tigers even lost to MTSU.
The Vols, on the other hand, are now 4-4, and seemingly have shaken off the effects of a rough statrt to the year. They are still looking for their first win streak of the season, and would accomplish that with a victory over Memphis.
The Tigers have been outscored 145-77 in the second half of games this season, which plays right into one of Tennessee strengths. Despite a rash of injuries, Tennessee has been the fresher team late in most of their games.
Tennessee is favored by more than three and a half touchdowns in this contest. That sounds about right...
Tennessee 35, Memphis 10.
Mark's 2009 Fearless Prediction Record: 8-1

"Memphis even lost to MTSU".
"Memphis even lost to MTSU". What does that imply?? MTSU has a pretty good team this year if you would do your homework. It's funny though, because a lot of people say that of the vols.
"South Carolina lost to Georgia, Alabama, and even lost to UT" Wow.
MTSU Pride
You know what Chris, you have a point. Now, MTSU would go 1-7 in the SEC, but they are putting together a very nice year in the Sun Belt at 6-3 overall. Blue Raiders bowl eligible... still chasing Troy.
