Vols vs. Kentucky... A Fearless Prediction
I was there... on February 7th, 2006.
Bruce Pearl's Vols were on their way to a 22-8 record, and a first place finish in the SEC's Eastern Division, something that has become a common occurrence now.
But back then, Tennessee fans were still in a state of bliss. A team which had spent four mediocre years under Buzz Peterson, was suddenly in the national rankings.
And on that February evening in Lexington, Tennessee picked up a rare win at Rupp Arena, 75-67 . Chris Lofton scored a game high 31 points against the team that wouldn't offer him a scholarship, despite the fact that he was Mr. Basketball in the Bluegrass State out of Maysville.
In their last three tips to Lexington, the Vols have had more talented teams, but did not come close to equaling that achievement. They lost by an average of more than 14 points per contest.
Tonight could be even worse. Wayne Chism is a game-time decision. Scotty Hopson isn't one hundred percent. And Brian Williams, who has his eligibility restored after serving a suspension, is nowhere near ready to make a significant impact.
And this would be the time the Vols could really use his muscle close to the basket. Kentucky is the tallest team in major college team in the nation, and they outrebound their opponents by more than 10 boards a game.
I don't doubt Bruce Pearl's ability to motivate. They seem to play their best basketball at times when no one thinks they can win.
It just won't happen tonight.
Kentucky 76, Tennessee 66
Mark's 2010 Fearless Prediction Record: 0-1
