Who should be in the first NASCAR Hall of Fame class?

Submitted by Mark Nagi on October 13, 2009 - 8:30pm

The NASCAR Hall of Fame will finally open its doors in Charlotte next year.

In May, the first Hall of Fame class will be inducted.  While there are many worthy entrants, only five people will gain entry.

Who do you think should get in right off the bat?

Here are my 5...

1.) Richard Petty - 200 wins and seven Cup Series titles

2.) Dale Earnhardt - Also a seven time Cup Series champion

3.) Bill France Sr.

NASCAR fans wish is granted

Submitted by Mark Nagi on November 8, 2009 - 10:59pm

OK, I'll say it.  NASCAR's playoff system had become as exciting as Dave Clawson's 2008 offense.

Jimmie Johnson has the best car, best crew, best technology (and yes, he can drive well too)...

NASCAR Media Tour getting underway...

Submitted by Mark Nagi on January 18, 2010 - 10:56am

I arrived in the greater Charlotte area at 9:30am... ready to ask NASCAR drivers and crew chiefs all sorts of important, ground breaking questions.

Actually, I'm just hoping I don't ask Tony Stewart what kind of gasoline he puts in his Yugo.

I'll be blogging throughout the week, so check in what you get the chance.

Today, Stewart-Haas Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing take center stage.

NASCAR Media Tour... Day two

Submitted by Mark Nagi on January 19, 2010 - 9:45am

Before I head downstairs for the start of the second day of the NASCAR Media Tour, some quick observations from day one...

- Everyone is still trying to figure out how to beat Hendrick Motorsports.

- Tony Stewart is in midseason form with regards to snapping at reporters.

- For every year Joe Gibbs is featured on this tour, I will ask him an NFL question.

Ok, will check in later.  On my way to Richard Childress Racing press conference...

Kevin Harvick's future

Submitted by Mark Nagi on January 19, 2010 - 11:22am

In 2009 Kevin Harvick said that he would leave Richard Childress Racing following the 2010 season.

He didn't sound that sure this morning.  Harvick has been with RCR since jumping into the late Dale Earnhardt's car in 2001.  That car, of course, changed from the iconic number 3, to the 29.

Harvick said that he is concerned with winning races and the upcoming 2010 season, and that 2011 will take care of itself.  I think he realizes that because of the economic realities of the sport, the best place for him might still be at RCR, so don't be surprised if a deal

NASCAR's baby mania...

Submitted by Mark Nagi on January 19, 2010 - 6:48pm

Elliott Sadler and Carl Edwards have something in common, other than the fact that both drive Fords in the Sprint Cup series.

Both drivers are about to become Dad's for the first time.

This could pose a serious issue.  What if the baby is born on race day?  Obviously they have thought about this, and have contingency plans in place.

Some advice from a father of two?  Even if it is the Daytona 500, you do NOT miss the birth of your child.  You could win the Great American Race, but forever have that abscence hanging over your head.

Hopefull

NASCAR Media Tour - Day 2 in the books

Submitted by Mark Nagi on January 20, 2010 - 1:41am

Day two of the NASCAR Media Tour in the books.  We had the opportunity to tour the not-yet-completed NASCAR Hall of Fame, which is opening in May here in Charlotte.

It's hard to believe that NASCAR has been in existence for more than 60 years, but there has been no place to showcase the history of this sport.

There is still a lot of work to do in that uptown Charlotte location, but I feel I can safely say...

NASCAR Media Tour... Day Three

Submitted by Mark Nagi on January 20, 2010 - 10:40am

Day three of the NASCAR Media Tour is underway... the big draw this afternoon is a trip to Hendrick Motorsports.  That means Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will head to the microphone.

This will be Earnhardt's third year at Hendrick... he has exactly one victory on the Sprint Cup circuit during this run.  Not what Rich Hendrick expected when he let Kyle Busch leave in order to pick up NASCAR's most popular driver.

Trevor Bayne meets the media

Submitted by Mark Nagi on January 20, 2010 - 11:43am

Knoxville native Trevor Bayne might be only 18 years old (he turns 19 next month), but he is already handling his professional life like a seasoned pro.

Bayne will run a full schedule on the Nationwide Series circuit for Michael Waltrip this season, after racing in about a third of those events one year ago.

He spoke with reporters this morning, and certainly did not sound like your normal teenager.  More than a few NASCAR followers have said that Bayne is a star in the making in this sport.

On a personal note, Bayne told me that he is heading back to Knox

"Make or break year" for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Submitted by Mark Nagi on January 20, 2010 - 4:42pm

Today we stopped by Hendrick Motorsports, the most dominant organization in NASCAR.

Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon finished 1-2-3 in the Sprint Cup point standings last season, which is obviously good.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., now in his 3rd year at Hendrick, knows the pressure is on his 88 team.  His crew chief, Lance McGrew, told me that this is a "make or break year" for Earnhardt.
